Unmanned Aerial Systems

The utilization of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) technology into Lee County Mosquito Control District (LCMCD) operations has provided citizens an opportunity to receive a less invasive mosquito treatment option near civilian homes, sensitive wildlife, and areas which may be too large for treatment by hand, yet are too small to be considered efficient for treatment by manned aircraft. Current applications with UAS at LCMCD include generating high resolution imagery for areas of interest, precise autonomous treatment for mosquitoes, and acquisition of meteorological data. LCMCD also uses Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology to conduct habitat evaluation and change detection for inaccessible habitats that pose significant challenges to aerial visual inspection. As technology advances, LCMCD will continue to lead the way in determining how UAS technology can effectively and efficiently assist in our mission to protect public health.

If you have questions about the District’s use of unmanned aerial systems, please contact the District at UAS@lcmcd.org.
